Vannia Phillips

I started practicing yoga fourteen years ago, finding inspiration from many different teachers and styles. At first, I could not understand why down dog was so darn hard, but felt so inspired that I wanted to experience and understand more. One class led to two then three then five. I eventually developed a home practice. As a violinist and violist, I attribute my healthy wrists, back, and shoulders to my regular yoga practice. What started out as physical exercise adds so much more to my life. The focus, the connection to something bigger, and the awareness that is cultivated continue to draw me to the practice.

I took training in Thai massage with Paul Weitz eleven years ago to explore the therapeutic possibilities. I later studied yoga anatomy with Tias Little. Drawn to the playful yet strong practice of Anusara, I completed a 200 hour yoga teacher training in July, 2011 with Sarah Richelle Starnes, a certified Anusara teacher. In 2013, I studied with Martin Kirk to further deepen my understanding of anatomy.

I am grateful for the many teachers I have studied with regularly including Dorie Silverman, Cara Butler, Sarah Starnes, Sara Strother, Lynne Piggot, and David Wallen. I am also grateful to the teachers who have inspired me in workshops and additional trainings, especially Noah Maze, Christina Sell, Martin Kirk, and Sianna Sherman.
